The beginning of may is dedicated to two media festivals: on the 7th and 8th we will be at the impressive Re:publica Festival Berlin, where I’ll be holding a talk and a performance.
From Berlin we will rave straight to Genève to attend the wonderful mapping festival for visual and media arts from the 9th on. From 22.03. – 23.03 we were invited to perform with our drum robot installation MR-808 at the B-Seite Festival 2013 in Mannheim, a mid-scale festival for VJ Culture. I have to confess that I localized the VJ-culture so far in a non-arts, clubby context as an accessory part to a DJ. I was convinced of the opposite.
The non-commercial festival features in its 6th edition different kinds of visual arts, with a focus on VJ-culture, but also computer-Art, interactive installations and AV-Performances.
The festival’s main spot is the Zeitraumexit in Mannheim just in front of the Pop Akademie. The Festival timetable consists of a loose combination of showcases, installations, workshops and parties, and has a lot of friendly details like the sleazy and cosy hotel in 70th style (including the smoking desk lady or the ashtreys in every room).
In the following I’ll grab some of the events I saw, that interested me the most.
The most impressing visuals we saw were presented at a small talk by Franz Aumüller, a visual artist who worked together with Brian Eno and Kraftwerk. The talk “Der Absolute Film – the roots of visual music” illuminated the works of Hans and Oskar Fischinger both visual artists who worked in the early 20s.

The english engineer and artist Robb Higgs has created a stunning robot for the movie “The Best Offer”. This is really hardcore mechanic.
Seit gut einem Jahr habe ich nun einen 3-D Drucker Replicator (erste Generation) von Makerbot und aufgrund der vielen Rückfragen zu meinem ersten Artikel möchte ich zusammentragen, was ich bisher für Erlebnisse hatte. Denn die meistgestellte Frage lautet nach wie vor: Lohnt sich die Anschaffung so eines 1500-2500€ teuren Gadgets.
Zuallererst: ich bin auch nach einem Jahr Arbeit mit dem Replicator 1 immer noch sehr zufrieden. Ich drucke im Schnitt alle zwei Tage, größtenteils für meine verschiedenen Kunst- und Technikprojekte, gelegentlich auch für Freunde oder Auftragsweise.
Ja, Ja, Ja - 3D-Drucker sind noch “für Bastler”. Will heißen: 3D Druck ist anspruchsvoller als Papierdruck. Mensch muss sich circa nach 3-10 Prints mit Reparaturen oder Neu-Einstellungen beschäftigen. Aber zwischen dem Neuprogrammieren einer alten CNC Fräse und dem Handyakkuwechseln gibt es ja Zwischentöne.
Die Punkte die ich im folgenden beschreibe, gelten für meinen Replicator 1 und ich denke grundsätzlich auch für den Replicator 2. Sie geben einen ganz guten Einblick, was man ungefähr für einen Aufwand aufbringen muss um einen 3D Drucker am Laufen zu halten.
